It's Been a While

Posted at 01:07 pm by Steviemo in MN  |  Comments (4) <--Right-click "Open New Window" for full-size

Nothing posted here since December 2004?  Does anyone still checkin here?  Does Howard Dean read this?

I'm sure many "Dean Leaders" would like to give the good doctor a bit of advice from time to time in his curent role as DNC chair.  Seems like this would be a good place to do that if we could get him in the loop.

So, is anybody out there?

Blog comments about the disconnect with HQ

Posted at 06:31 am by Renee in Ohio  |  Comments (11) <--Right-click "Open New Window" for full-size

From the DFA Day in the Life: Chris Warshaw thread

I still have some holiday preparations (lots, actually) to work on today, but I wanted to repost something from a couple nights ago, because I haven't yet seen it addressed. Once upon a time I would have really appreciated a post about "what it's like at HQ", but since we are still struggling with this disconnect, it just doesn't have the same effect...

Click my name for the thread "Ohio Urged to Veto Bill". Some highlight's I'd like to draw to your attention:

What *is* this obsession with Ohio all of a sudden?

Posted by Free Spirit at December 16, 2004 11:25 PM

It's either overcompensation ("we can't mention the Ohio recount so here's the next-best thing we can do") or it's getting our attention focused on Ohio for something big that's about to go down. If I were a betting man I'd place my money on the former, not the latter.

Posted by Oscar at December 16, 2004 11:31 PM

Yes, they are trying to give the Ohio people something else to think about. Distraction. Except it's Ohio, right, so it is backfiring. Reminds me of framing. When you say "elephant" people automatically think of a big animal with floppy ears and a trunk. When you say "Ohio" people automatically think of voter fraud. Well, a group of folks around here do, anyway... So a day full of posts about Ohio is about the very worst thing you could do to distract anyone from the proposed voter fraud.

My theory is that they're caught between the strings...

My best guess, too, but it seems rather painfully obvious. Reminds me of little kids trying to play hide and seek...you know, where they hide in more or less plain site because they haven't quite figured out when other people can and can't see them? I mean, this is the organization that's supposed to take back the Democratic Party?

We simply asked a group of eager-to-blog senators to guest post on an issue that concerned both themselves and Governor Dean. Senator Hagan held a press conference with Governor Dean today, which we will be posting a transcript of tomorrow. Don't read into it too much.

Posted by Tara Liloia DFA at December 17, 2004 12:13 AM

Okay--and I *did* end up saying it's a good thing that you posted about this, and why it is an important issue.

But we'll be watching for inclusion of the real *news* that is going on in Ohio regarding the election and the recount in future news roundups. If this blog had addressed that in a timely fashion in the first place, rather than treating it like the "elephant in the room", there would be no need to read anything into today's Ohio posts.

We can't change the past, but we can learn from it.

We *can* work together to create a blog that reflects the diverse interests and concerns of this DFA/blog family community.

We *can* develop a mechanism by which questions, such as the ones we've asked so many times about the "blog nanny" are answered.

We *can* keep hope alive, in the knowledge that we are always *becoming* a community that is greater than what we are now--capable of accomplishing things together that we can't even imagine at this point.

Can I hear an "Amen!"?

But yes, it would help to have some acknowledgement of events in Ohio ... because many of us here believe that all votes should be counted ... and counted accurately.

Anyone who does not believe that is not a believer in democracy. And that's the bottom line.

Why is it that exit polls in the Ukraine(!?) are considered to be more accurate than exit polls in the US? Who's got the votes?

More Voting Questions Raised

Posted at 09:49 am by Renee in Ohio  |  Comments (5) <--Right-click "Open New Window" for full-size

Oops--I didn't pay attention and notice which blog I was posting this in. It was meant to be posted in my new blog, Ohio Counts. Suppose this is as good a time as any to tell you about my new blog. ;-)

This is from a
Daily Kos diary by buckeye prof. It refers to an article in the Columbus Dispatch entitled More Voting Questions Raised. For anyone unfamiliar with the Dispatch, it is a site that requires registration, and it is not free registration like the New York Times and others. Registration to read articles online is $4.95 a month if you are not a subscriber to the Dispatch.

An Akron man filed a complaint with the Summit County Board of Elections saying he "witnessed election judges telling potential voters that they could cast a provisional ballot at any table or precinct and if they did so, it would be counted."

Neil F. Schoenwetter Jr. was a volunteer election challenger for the Democratic Party on Nov. 2 at Copley High School, where six precincts voted.

Congress' investigative agency, responding to complaints from Ohio and elsewhere, has begun to look into the vote count, including the handling of provisional ballots and malfunctions of voting machines.

The Government Accountability Office usually begins investigations at the request of Congress, but the agency's head, Comptroller General David Walker, said the GAO acted on its own because of ballot-counting complaints.

The investigation was not triggered by several House Democrats who had written the agency this month, seeking an investigation. That effort was led by senior Judiciary Committee member John Conyers, of Michigan.

Conyers yesterday said he would like the investigation to include allegations that not enough voting machines were available in some Democratic areas, such as Franklin County.

Meanwhile, attorneys for various citizen action groups that plan to contest the results said they are puzzled that vote totals in the presidential race in Warren County far exceed totals in most other statewide and countywide races.

Click here to read the rest of the Kos diary, which details more voting irregularites. It is rather amusing (or upsetting, depending on my mood on a given day) to note the indignity with which some people are responding to the call for a recount...

Ohio Republican Party Chairman Robert T. Bennett issued a statement questioning the vote challenges:

"These groups have already acknowledged the outcome of the election will not change, and their actions represent a foolish attempt to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the Bush presidency," he said. "I call on the leadership of the Ohio Democratic Party to immediately concede that this worthless recount request is an insult to the integrity of Ohio's election system."

Bush not a "likeable guy"--everyday analogies

Posted at 01:28 pm by Renee in Ohio  |  Comments (8) <--Right-click "Open New Window" for full-size

I started a thread about this over at Kos, but wanted to be able to collect responses somewhere that didn't require an account. So take a look at the ideas over there, and post your own thoughts here.

W is for Women because...

...because there's nothing we love more than a man who won't admit when he's wrong!

(My husband just made this into a bumper sticker, by the way.)

I've been thinking about the whole "nice, regular guy" thing that Bush supposedly has going for him, and how to counter it. Thinking back to the "security mom" theme, and how, it would feel anything but secure to be married to a guy who acts like this in day to day life. He...

...flips off other drivers when you and the kids are in the car
...buys you presents with the kids' college money

Here are some of the ideas that were submitted:

He buys himself and his drinking buddies toys with you kid's college money,

Lies to you about where he's going and why,

Takes out a life insurance policy on you without telling you,

P*sses on the neighbor's geraniums,

Speeds the wrong way down a one-way street,

Randomly shoots big guns in a residential area just 'cuz he can, and laughs when he scares the children.

by mataliandy

Picks fights with the guy across the room, just 'cause he looked at him funny, and "Honest, I thought he had a knife."

Calls you names and makes fun of you or your friends whenever either disagree with him.

Won't stop hanging out with that creep "who is always getting him into trouble" just because they "go way back."

Annoys the neighbors with his disturbances, but doesn't care because he doesn't need a "permission slip" from them to party/use powertools at night/park on their lawn.

ProgressiveStart.com > new "Directory" page that spans across the progressive movement -- and an example of why it is badly needed

Posted at 03:46 pm by Richard  |  Make a comment <--Right-click "Open New Window" for full-size

Some of you know of DeanPort.com -- the portal / 1-page directory I built for use in the Dean campaign.  It helped to aggregate all the various resources and groups -- organize them -- and put them all on one page for easy understanding of which resources were available at various stages of involvement.. from "I know nothing about Dean; tell me about him" --> "That sounds good; I'd like to volunteer. Where do I start?" --> "Now that I'm helping, can we have one place where all our day-to-day tools and resources can be accessed?"

That's how DeanPort was designed -- and it worked, and was nominated for "Best National Political Campaign Website" by the Institute for Online Politics at GWU -- and it lost to DFA.com -- which wasn't a bad loss at all.

Now I have done the same thing -- but for the whole progressive movement -- zooming out to top level. Who are the major players? How do they fit into the picture? How can I get involved?

ProgressiveStart.com - Start-Page for the Progressive Movement

It couldn't be more timely, as the very relevant example below will show. Please add this important link to your websites and volunteer-opportunities promotional materials, and send it to your Yahoo group lists. And spread the word so that we don't have people in a state of "not knowing". With so many organizations occupying different sectors of the progressive landscape, this one-page will help keep people oriented -- and keep resources readily available.

Right now is version 1 -- out the gate fast. And some have criticized "it's too much! simplify it". Give it time. DeanPort, I can assure you, has almost twice the number of links -- but when a web user interface designer connects with this information design scheme, the whole thing will look -- and be -- much more manageable.  Help it grow by sending in suggestions for links to top-level resources that are missing from the current list.

Also, probably too late for now... but DeanMall.com will be rebranded "ElectionGearMall.com" -- to accomplish the same function DeanMall did for Dean -- but now for the whole of the progressive landscape.  The area of DeanMall that never got developed to the degree I had hoped -- lack of time -- was the "HOW TO" section, such as the FEC GUIDE FOR DUMMIES.  The value of DeanMall was and is its automation. Much like DeanPhotos.com, you don't need permission to add your T-shirt designs or posters, or sources for merchandise, or DVDs and VHS videos. The system allows you to "Add Listings" and it beautifully catalogues your listing making it searchable by the correct category of "gear".

Lastly, expect to see DeanPhotos.com back online in a matter of days. We switched hosting companies -- and now will have plenty of room to grow. Stay tuned.

Thanks very much,

Richard Hoefer

Now, here's the example which shows WHY a top-level portal site is needed for Progressives:  it's too hard to keep up with so many orgs -- that key and vital information gets dropped -- wasting precious volunteer resources. All due to "if only I had known earlier ...."

Subject:  voter contact/gotv coalition et al

i went to wisconsin on saturday with my dfa meetup,
and found a gentleman from indiana who was helping
us up there in wisconsin. i asked him why he was
there, in wisconsin, instead of in michigan, which
is also a battleground state and closer to where he
lived. he indicated that he could not find anyone
to work with in michigan, and that he had gotten an
email telling him about this opportunity.

what that tells me is that people organizing locally
may be unaware of the organizational structure that
has been up for more than a year. several steps
along the way, this gentleman should have been
referred to the michigan coalition, but hadn't been,
clearly for lack of knowledge by those in which he
had contact.

we need to work within the system that has been
established, even though it was established before
the dean swarm proved that democrats would volunteer
on a massive scale outside their home states --
regardless of how ineffective some of the .orgs are/
have been; we need not to try to reinvent the wheel
just because we can.

groups of democrats, progressives, and like-minded
organizations got together more than a year ago to
discuss ordination of the efforts that they intended
to do to "re-defeat" george bush. they formed an
organization or coalition which allowed them to
coordinate these efforts amongst themselves, although
not with the official democratic nominee or the party.
this coalition, called america votes (one of those 527s)
is the umbrella group of 32 .orgs, including dfa, that
ponied up $50,000 to coordinate voter contact and
mobilization efforts. a significant number of former
dean staffers are working in various parts of this
coalition, which is made up of:

<http://www.americavotes.org/what_we_do.cfm>

ACORN
AFL-CIO
AFSCME
America Coming Together (ACT)
American Federation of Teachers
Association of Trial Lawyers of America
Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence United With the Million Mom March
Clean Water Action
Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
Democracy for America
EMILY's List
Environment2004
The Human Rights Campaign
League of Conservation Voters
The Media Fund
MoveOn.org Voter Fund
Moving America Forward
Music for America
NAACP National Voter Fund
NARAL Pro-Choice America
National Education Association
National Jewish Democratic Council
National Treasury Employees Union
Partnership for America's Families
People for the American Way
Planned Parenthood Action Fund
SEIU
Sierra Club
USAction
Voices for Working Families
Young Voter Alliance
21st Century Democrats

at the national level, these organizations divided
up the anticipated battleground states into regions
of primary responsibility, although there is some
overlap. some of that overlap is intentional. for
example, act is (another) 527, which means that it
cannot expressly (legally) advocate voting for a
specific candidate. otoh, the league of conservation
voters is a pac, which can advocate voting for kerry,
and can do what we call persuasion canvassing. it
should be obvious that act and lcv would work different
precincts in battleground states -- act trying to
mobilize heavily-democratic precincts, while lcv goes
into swing precincts to do persuasion, voter id, and
gotv.

working within this coalition seems to be doubly
important, as i have heard numerous reports of people
who tried to volunteer with their local democratic
party, but were turned away because their local party
had been overwhelmed with volunteer offers. they
didn't know how to handle this, or what grassroots
could do, outside of the things they've always done.
the america votes coalition groups *can* use the
help, what you do with them will be productive, and
it will be decisive.

but this is by no means perfectly coordinated (a lot of
these organizations do not have the leadership necessary
for keeping up with such a massive coordinated effort),
but for the most part it seems to be working. also,
some groups seem to be better organized than others.
for example, in wisconsin, lcv is working on their
second round of door-to-door efforts, while act has yet
to complete their first round. (a good canvassing
effort requires at least three rounds before election
day, some of the more organized do 5 rounds, to make
sure that every voter gets contacted.)

deciding that you want to work with a specific .org
is silly, unless you live in an area in which that .org
has primary responsibility (and you want to work within
the legal framework of that .org's organization). for
example, i, myself, not being a democrat, wouldn't want
to work within the legal confines of a group like act,
because they cannot legally do persuasion canvassing.
i, obviously, am interested in mobilizing voters in
swing precincts, even though i understand and appreciate
the need to boost voter turnout in core democratic
precincts. as the kids say, it's all good.

here are the contact names/numbers for the state
coordinators for the coalition. if you don't know
what group has primary responsibility for the area or
region in which you want to volunteer, please contact
them and ask. that's why they're there!

finally, if you need help, or don't know how to
help someone else, please ask for it. there's nothing
wrong with not knowing every little thing about how
this is all organized that anyone should judge you
for having incomplete information. it's all rather
convoluted, and the kerry campaign is most definitely
not organized in the same way as the dean campaign
was. experience in the dean effort does not translate
perfectly over to understanding the kerry campaign,
etc. given the wealth of knowledge we have here,
most likely someone will know the answer to the
questions you ask!

I hate to start worthless discussions but I feel I have to respond to your
recent message about a volunteer in Milwaukee. I totally disagree with your
approach to the gentleman who volunteered in Milwaukee who happens to live
in Indiana.

There are many of us who volunteer because we want to, not because we think
it is our duty. I, for one, have had it with the Democratic party and with
so called ³structure² which simply seems to mean that the party believes
they own my vote, my money and my time because Bush is evil.

Volunteers, by definition, can choose where they want to volunteer and what
they want to do. They are perfectly within their rights to choose certain
opportunities over others. If someone prefers to work further away from
home, why shouldn¹t they? We should thank them, include them and continue.

The way to put people off is to tell them they ³should² do this or that. If
you choose to volunteer closest to home that is your right and privilege.
Please leave the rest of us alone to make up our own minds. We will pick
what seems most suitable to us.

Thank you,

Lali

afaik, no one told this volunteer what he *should*
do. i certainly didn't. i asked him *why* he
hadn't volunteered in michigan, and he told me
that there was nothing available -- which was
false. he was the victim of poor information.

hence, the reason that i wrote the original
message, to equip those who deal with volunteers
with the information they need to make wise
decisions. the fact that this volunteer was
never linked to the information that he needed
to make the best decision (for him) is what i
object to. i assume it was because the people
in which he was in contact didn't know.
hopefully, that has been rectified...

It's Like DEJA VU All Over Again

John Fogerty's New Album, It's Like DeJa VU All Over Again, is being released in September.  Here are the words to the title track.  Lest any of us forget...

DEJA VU (ALL OVER AGAIN)

Did you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radio
Did you try to read the writing on the wall
Did that voice inside you say I've heard it all before
It's like DEJA VU all over again

Day by day I hear the voices rising
Started with a whisper like it did before
Day by day we count the dead and dying
Ship the bodies home while the networks all keep score

Did you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radio
Could your eyes believe the writing on the wall
Did that voice inside you say I've heard it all before
It's like DEJA VU all over again

One by one I see the old ghosts rising
Stumblin' 'cross Big Muddy
Where the light gets dim
Day after day another Momma's crying
She's lost her precious child
To a war that has no end

Did you hear 'em talking 'bout it on the radio
Did you stop to read the writing at The Wall
Did that voice inside you say
I've seen this all before
It's like DEJA VU all over again
It's like DEJA VU all over again

The birth of (half of a) Flat John Kerry

Just gonna tell this story in BFA comments, okay?

big...

heavy...

sigh!

I was just talking to my mom on the phone, and she was reading something to me about an AARP RV tour thing (that she and my dad won't be attending). It involved a chance to learn about the candidates, and you could have your picture taken with a life-size cardboard cutout of a candidate. Mom was wondering, I guess, if Demetrius had anything to do with creating one of those.

Now Demetrius is working on another attempt to create a Flat John Kerry. I ventured back to the Kerry-Edwards site to try to find good pictures. Of John Kerry.

What an absolutely soul-sucking experience.

I might need a drink now.

Soul-sucking why? Please elaborate.

Off to bed. Demetrius, my husband of 17 years, father of my children, is at his desk working on a John Kerry image. And when I say "working on", I don't mean putting a cartoon villian mustache or little horns on it.

Sigh. This is just so, well, Howardly of him.

BWAAAA HA HA!!! It's ALIVE!!! IT'S ALIVE!!!!!

OK. Just sort of... Click my name for a Flat John Kerry poster to cut out and attach to foam core or cardboard. He's perfect for your next tabling event. Or, you can just stick him with the check at an expensive restaurant! (Just make sure his back is to the wall.)

I will work on a version in pieces to print at home for free.

Posted at 12:45 pm by SallyinSF  |  Comments (5) <--Right-click "Open New Window" for full-size

Can anyone tell me how to get to DeanPhotos?  I've tried every link to get there and it's gone.  I tried going in through DeanLeaders, no go.  I've tried my link for DeanPix and DeanPhotos - no go.  I want to see the quilt Ann did for Dean!  Anyone know how to get there from here?
Thanks,
Sally in SF

Questions for DFA HQ

Posted at 08:42 am by Renee in Ohio  |  Comments (29) <--Right-click "Open New Window" for full-size

Continuing a much needed discussion which started at Blog for America...

And since it seems that Tara is reading the blog, FWIW it would be helpful to have a blog entry with a link to Dean's article of the week. I never remember which week he's published and don't always check.

I suspect they can't link to Dean's columns. At one point someone said they had to stay at arm's length from anything Dean was paid to do, because of the financing rules.

Rather than guess, I'd like a confirmation of this.

We should start a list of questions about "What we wanna know".

I think HQ should be open to working with us to create a FAQ that answers the questions we keep asking. This bit about the legal regulations is one area, and another is, "What non-curse words will get your post blocked?"

Posted by Renee*in*Ohio at August 5, 2004 11:33 AM

Anyway, it seems like the same questions keep coming up, but are never answered officially. Let's try to change that. Ask your questions here, and we can compile them and send them to HQ. If you know who would be the right person to send them to (and that person's e-mail address), please pass that information along to me at renee at bmgbiz.net.

Positive thoughts/prayers for Kimmy's sister

Posted at 06:00 pm by Renee in Ohio  |   <--Right-click "Open New Window" for full-size

I know people who read this blog are probably familiar with Kimmy, who has posted here in the past--most famously when she posted a message to Howard Dean and he responded in the thread. Right now Kimmy's sister is in the hospital in Dallas and is very ill. She and Frankie have both been posting updates in the Blog for America comments, and I have collected most of them here for anyone who wanted to know what is going on but didn't want to sift through days of threads.

The doctors have said that Christy has sepsis, but have been unable to diagnose the cause, and are only able to treat the symptoms. The family has been looking into alternative treatments, and is very much welcoming any prayers or positive thoughts we have to offer. At the moment things seem to be looking up--if you go to the bottom of the page here, you can see that Christy has finally woken up. But since she is not out of the woods yet, I thought I would still post the following.

I think it was puddleriver who posted something in a recent thread about a study of the effects of intercessory prayer. Larry Dossey writes about this...

LARRY DOSSEY: One of the best-kept secrets I've come across in the past few years is an organization in Salem, Oregon called Spindrift. If you look up the term "spindrift" in the dictionary it comes from an old Scottish word referring to the fuzzy spray where a wave breaks and meets the air. It's the interface between something ethereal and something concrete, which is how they chose the name. The people at Spindrift have performed experiments for over ten years, showing the ability of what they call "prayer practitioners" to make a difference in what happens in the development and metabolism of extremely simple biological systems, such as sprouting seeds and yeast cultures. They have measured the amount of carbon dioxide a yeast culture gives off to determine how active it is. One reason they don't work with human beings is that plants are much simpler. You can count sprouting beans, and do it time and time again to see if it's replicable. Beans don't change as drastically as humans. It far easier to work with yeast, sprouting beans, wheat seeds and so on. So that's what they have done. They have gone beyond showing that prayer works, and have examined the issue of which prayer strategy works best. They have tested two. The first is a directed prayer strategy, where not only do you provide God, Goddess or the Absolute with the diagnosis of the problem, but you provide the treatment too. You say, "John's got carcinoma of the lung, so make it go away." Or "Harry has a heart attack, we want to see it healed." This is the kind of petitionary prayer most of us grow up thinking is the only klind of prayer there is. But then they tested what they call a nondirected prayer strategy, which is completely open ended, and does not attach a goal to the prayer. They have several of these nondirected prayer strategies. The most famous prayer of this type is "Thy will be done." Another one they used is from the Beatles tune, "Let it be." My all-time favorite nondirected prayer strategy is the caption on the back cover of the first Whole Earth Catalog, "You can't put it together. It is together." One of the assumptions of this nondirected prayer strategy is that at some level, in some way, at some deep level of reality, things are just fine, perfect as they are. Over a decade, Spindrift has shown, and this is the bottom line, that both methods of prayer work. But working with these prayer pracitioners, they have shown that the nondirected prayer method is two to four times more powerful than the directed.

Click to read more. What I am going to put out there is that anyone who wants to take part in this say a prayer or intention or hope for Kimmy's sister on the hour as often as you are able to. Again, this is totally grasping at straws. Look at the rest of the article I linked to for description of the connection to physics and "nonlocal effects". I don't get this from my religion--it is probably blasphemous to a lot of people. But maybe "thought energy" can change things in a way we don't understand.

Any way, in my gut level feeling that this might be true, it seems like focussing the thought energy at certain times would be more effective than everyone just saying a prayer, intention, or affirmation when they think of it. So if you want to, please join me, whenever you are aware of the time and are able to, on the hour--9 p.m., 10 p.m. and so on.

Also, I have an intentions page set up here for people we are keeping in our thoughts and prayers.
